A Buy Category B1 Driving License permits you to drive a car that has a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of over 3,500kg. It also permits you to transport a trailer up to 750kg.

Validity time
The validity of a B1 driving licence is two years. However, it could be shorter if you suffer from specific health conditions that affect your ability to safely drive. You must also pass an additional test if you wish to drive a vehicle that has a kerbweight greater than 3.5 tonnes. You must pass the test in Category C and meet other requirements to obtain the license.

The DVLA hopes to change the law to allow drivers with licences already have this privilege but for the time being, drivers will need to pass the BE test.

Insurance
Insurance companies take drivers with Category B1 driving licenses to be low-risk. This is because they've proven to be free of violations and accidents for at five years. This means their insurance premiums are less than those of high-risk drivers. However, they may not qualify for certain discounts, like those offered to military personnel who live in housing on post. To be eligible for these discounts, you'll need to provide an USPS mailing address that's recognized by the US Postal Service (see below).
If you're a category B driver and want to drive larger vehicles, you'll be able to get an additional category of licence. The B1 license allows you to drive four-wheel motor vehicles up to 400kg without cargo or 550kg with cargo. It also allows you to drive trailers with smaller dimensions.
The Category AM allows you to drive mopeds with three or two wheels that can travel at speeds that exceed 28mph and a weight unloaded of 350kg. (Excluding batteries for electric vehicles). This category is only available to those who have completed the Compulsory Training Test. You can only have one category on your license at any time.
The maximum authorised mass of a vehicle is printed on the registration certificate. You can also find it on the DVLA website. A vehicle with a higher MAM will require a BE licence while a vehicle with a lower MAM is only required to have a B+E or Category B licence.
You can add higher categories to your licence by passing the test for the category that you'd like to drive. For example, you can get a category C1 licence by passing a test that is designed for medium-sized lorries. If you already have a category B licence holder, you can add the category for a period of up to 10 years after passing the test.
